Evening Pilgrimages

A journey of an hour - and a lifetime.

Evening Pilgrimages are meditative journeys with seven stopping places where a theme is unfolded by the Pilgrim Singers and Readers.

The format is unique to Bradford Cathedral.

Each occasion is different, created specifically for the Cathedral or for your own parish church, anywhere in the Diocese.

Recipe for a Pilgrimage

  • Take Bradford's beautiful Cathedral, with its changing perspectives of light and shadow, luminous with summer sun, mysterious in the dusk or flickering in candlelight on a winters evening. Add a rich blend of stillness and movement, silence and sound, word and song.

  • Create a theme journey, which highlights the long history and beautiful features of the Cathedral. Themes may be topical or historic, with contemporary issues and historic turning points explored in a blend of fact and reflection

  • Add music which is varied, in mood and in origin. tranquil medieval plainsong intoned from afar, interweaving Tudor motets sung in the resonant shadows, or vibrant songs of the world-wide Church.

  • Select readings drawn from a wealth of literature both ancient and modern, world-wide. Include the most inspiring writers and poets of their day, such as St Augustine, Dag Hammarskjold, Dame Cicely Saunders or Spike Milligan's war poetry.

  • Listen to voices of Faith speaking from their own diverse experience and on behalf of many others, and see life in the world-wide community from new perspectives.

  • Bring together these special ingredients for a journey of the heart and mind in a peaceful time of reflection and prayer.

  • Mull quietly in the presence of God, and hear his music behind the words of life.
