Bradford, the birthplace
of Delius, is still a place of music. In Victorian times local choral
societies, church choirs and brass bands were founded which are still
going strong. The solid Victorian buildings of Bradford are still decorated
with exuberant detail - there is music even in the stones of this city.
Increasingly, the annual Bradford Festival brings out our hidden music
onto the streets for all to enjoy. The music of many cultures and traditions
expresses the vitality of this immensely varied city.
Bradford's ancient
parish church has long been a place of music - as early as the 1840's
the Church Choral Society was giving performances. That tradition is now
stronger than ever with a large and thriving Choir of boys, girls and
adults. The standards are high - the Choir sang for Her Majesty the Queen
in 1997 on Maundy Thursday.
A pattern of weekly
services are sung which contain music of many types and concerts and organ
recitals are given regularly. The Cathedral is also the venue for the
annual BICC Chamber Concert series and for concerts given by other Bradford
music societies.
