ECO-CONGREGATION |
| |
|
What?
Not a day goes by without
some mention of global warming, our carbon footprint, fair trade
or recycling. Becoming an Eco-congregation means we will commit
to these principlees but it is much more than this. As part of
the Vision Statement & Strategic
Plan (4.7) the Dean and Chapter are committed to us becoming
an Eco-congregation. The Archbishop of Canterbury has launched
"Shrinking
the Footprint" - a challenge to every parish to reduce
its carbon footprint.
|
|
|
Why?
Scripture tells us
that the earth is the Lord's and all that is in it (Psalm
24:1) and that He has given it to man Psalm 115:16). This
does not mean that He has relinquished His rights over it, but
that we have been delegated the responsibility to preserve and
care for it on His behalf. He created the earth and planted the
garden, but put Adam in it to work it and take care of it
(Genesis 1:25).
|
|
|
How?
Some things are easy
- we are already using Fair Trade products in the kitchen and
support the Bishop's Wells Appeal. Other projects will take more
working at. The Cathedral has set up a task group to review our
current practice and support ways of improving it.
|
|
|
When?
Now! We can all help
right now ... by becoming more knowledgeable on ecological matters:
read, listen to the news, go onto the internet if you can. Make
yourself aware of the many issues surrounding this topic, which
can be controversial. The Cathedral has already started by asking
some of its congregation to 'take up the baton'. The Diocesan
Day on 28th April this year will focus on the community and the
environment.

Fair Trade Fortnight
- 26 February to 11 March
During these two weeks
our clergy will continue to preach on the same theme. A Fairtrade
stall will be open on Sundays and Wednesdays - an opportunity
to buy and try out various Fairtrade products. On March 4th everyone
is invited to stay on after the 10:15 service for a 'bring and
share' lunch. we are welcoming John Anderson, Chair of Fairtrade,
Bradford to speak. This is a great opportunity to voice any questions
we may have. Please Come!
